Fillmore Canyon and the Mining History of the Organ Mountains

Join Bureau of Land Management Monuments Archaeologist, Garrett Leitermann, for a hike that will have you stepping into the past at Dripping Springs Natural Area within the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. This hike will take you to a ruins of a old mining town and mill at the mouth of Fillmore Canyon. On this hike participants will learn about the deep history of the Organ Mountains and hear stories of the rich mines that once dotted the mountain's slopes. This hike will emphasize how important practicing "Leave No Trace" principles are for enjoying public lands and ensuring the longevity of our nation's natural and cultural resources.  

Those looking to participate in the hike should meet at the La Cueva Parking lot of Dripping Springs Natural Area at 10:00am. Take I-10 West to I-25 North and take exit 1 University. Turn right onto University road, which becomes Dripping Springs Road heading east. After passing the gate at the entrance of Dripping Springs Natural Area, the road leading to the La Cueva parking lot is the first left turn. 

Remember to dress appropriately for the cold/cool weather and bring water, snacks, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and good hiking shoes. The hike will be approximately 3 hours and is relatively easy difficulty. The hike will stay on established trails and has gradual increases in elevation throughout. Since a portion of this hike will be within the Organ Mountain Wilderness, the number of participants will be capped at 15. Please RSVP to diegotolbert@gmail.com.
