Visit Black Mountain Volcano

Google Earth image

Black Mountain is a small cinder cone volcano found west of Berino, NM. You will visit this partially mined volcano to learn about the eruption and the lava. This trip includes an optional moderate hike up to the top of the volcano to view the lava flow and other volcanoes of the Potrillo Volcanic field. You will need a high clearance vehicle for this trip, or arrange ahead of time to carpool with someone in a high clearance vehicle. Your guide is a geologist and teaches at Southwest University.

Learning Objectives: Learn about the Geology of cinder cone volcanoes, be able to identify basalt and scoria (the dominant rock types at this volcano), and learn about the Rio Grande Rift of western North America.

Meet at the DQ gas station at Transmountain Road and Interstate 10 (MAP), and we will caravan from there to West Afton Road in Berino, NM. Black mountain is about 45 minutes from DQ.
