Aden Crater Sunset Hike and Moon Gazing

Join COM Board member Paulo Galvan on an evening hike to Aden crater followed by a lunar geology talk and a night of full moon gazing through our telescopes. Feel free to bring your own if you have one.  Aden crater is an Icelandic-type shield volcano northwest of El Paso and is located at the center of the Potrillo volcanic field. The massive lava flow where NASA astronauts trained during the 1960’s is also used today as a test site for future instruments and techniques that will be used in upcoming space exploration missions.

Bring plenty of water and dress for rough terrain. The hike is easy to moderate, sturdy, durable hiking shoes are highly recommended. Green or red flashlights will be best for the telescope portion of the tour. High clearance vehicles are a must due to the rough and rocky road. The drive is approximately 1.5 hours to the crater. The hike is roughly 2 hours and moon gazing will begin soon after sunset.

You are welcomed to bring your own telescopes, binoculars and cameras. Email Paulo Galvan at georocks30@gmail.com for questions, no need to RSVP. Meet at Flix Brewhouse on Paseo Del Norte and Desert Blvd N (MAP) at 4:30 pm to depart promptly at 4:45 pm.
