Fossils of Mt. Cristo Rey

Mt. Cristo Rey is the best place to discover fossils in the Paso del Norte region. This area contains the 2 largest fossil oysters that existed, fossil scallops, millions of small oysters, and many different trace fossils including dinosaur footprints! You will make several stops around the base of Mt. Cristo Rey and will not hike up to the top. Your guide has brought hundreds of groups of people to see the fossils in this amazing place, and is also a geologist from Southwest University who researches the fossils of Mt. Cristo Rey. Make sure to bring sturdy shoes, water, a hat, and dress appropriately for the weather.

Learning Objectives: Learn about the general geology of Mt. Cristo Rey. See many of the different marine and terrestrial fossils from the age of dinosaurs in El Paso. See the region’s only dinosaur footprints and learn about these dinosaurs and how they lived.

Meet on Cristo Rey Road at the yellow dinosaur sign. (MAP)
