Join Celebration of Our Mountains and the El Paso Mission Trail Association for an “art crawl”. You will learn about the history, the art and artists along the historic mission trail. Begin at the Mission Trail Center in Ysleta, 9065 Alameda Avenue (MAP). Hear a lecture by esteemed artist, Alberto Escamilla. While at the Mission Trail Center, see a new art exhibit by award winning artist, Robert Dozal. There will also be several art vendors and live music.
After leaving the Center, travel at your leisure. The following are stops along the way, coming or going:
Drive to Socorro and learn more from Marty Loya at Bodega Loya, 10257 Socorro Road (MAP) where there are several artists exhibiting, a coffee shop called Cafecito, and a green house with organic grown fuits and vegetables.
Finally, explore the galleries of San Elizario:
Located in the Placita Marid building 1445 Main Street: Escamilla’s Fine Art Gallery (El Paso Hall of Fame Artist Alberto Escamilla), Dozal Fine Art Gallery (Award winning artist Robert Dozal), and Romy Hawkins Studio & Gallery (Woman’s Hall of Fame artist Romy Hawkins).
Artists Bert Saldana and Gabriel Gaytan can be found at 1501 Main Street where there is also a cupcake and antique shop; Gaspar Enriquez Gallery 1458 Main St.; Erica Murrill Art Gallery (also a coffee shop Arte Mi Amore, and Mexican boutique) 1456 Main St.
In addition artist Ramiro Ordonez has an art exhibit at Los Pistoleros del Adobe Grill and Cantina (see restaurants below), 1500 Main Street, and will be there until October 13.
After your crawl (or even during it) savor some of the restaurants of the mission valley.There are several places where you can savor the restaurants of the mission valley during your art crawl: The Outlaw Saloon and Grill at Licon Dairy, 11951 Glorietta Rd C just outside of San Elizario as you head for the art district (MAP); Sofia’s, 11800 Glorietta Rd, on the outskirts of San Elizario before you reach the art district(MAP); Los Pistoleros, 1500 Main Street in San Elizario (MAP); and Shooters Smokin BBQ, 1591 Main Street in San Elizario (MAP)
On your crawl there are two very nice gift shops, one at the Ysleta Mission and the other at the Socorro Mission: “Ysleta Gift Shop” is attached to the Mission, 131 S. Zaragoza Road (MAP) and has work from local artisans; and a gift shop at the Socorro Mission, 328 S. Nevarez Rd. (MAP) managed by Magda Maureira.
