Take a tour of the UTEP Kidd Seismic Observatory with Dr. Aaron Velasco and then go to the site where a seismometer will be deployed. You will understand the importance of obtaining a seismic risk map to understand the region's vulnerability around El Paso to earthquakes. You will also learn the steps involved in designing a seismic array.
The KSO is located next to Sun Bowl. Meet outside the Geological Sciences Building (UTEP MAP) then walk from there to the seismic observatory. After your visit to the KSO, you will drive across town to 12850 Gambusino. (MAP) Solymar Ayala Cortez will deploy a seisemometer at that location to collect data that he can use to analyze the soils' natural vibrations to identify zones of vulnerability if there were an earthquake in the region.
