As El Paso History Radio Show host, Jackson Polk, says: “Texas history begins in El Paso.” Visit the second oldest mission in Texas in the second oldest settlement, Socorro, Texas. The Socorro mission was founded in 1691, the building was rebuilt twice following floods. The current structure, built in 1843, showcases both Indian and Spanish design as well as Spanish Mission architecture. You will see the legendary shrine to St. Michael dating from 1838, along with the grotto and the cemetery. The mission is now the active parish of La Purísima beginning in 1863. It is named in honor of the Blessed Virgin, Forever Pure.
Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to the mission at 328 S. Nevarez Street, Socorro, Texas. (MAP). Your guide will be Magda Maureira of the El Paso Mission Trail Association.
