Early Cacti on the Agave Loop Trail

Join cactus expert Dr. Gertrud Konings for a hike of the Agave Loop Trail in the Tom Mays Unit of the Franklin Mountains State Park (MAP) on the westside of the mountains and discover the well camouflaged small early bloomer cactus in its natural habitat. These are the first native cacti to bloom in our mountains and early March is a good time to find them blooming in their habitat.

The hike starts at the West Cottonwood trail parking lot and will take about 2.5 hrs with several stops to see the cacti and other plants along the trail. The Agave Loop Trail is a relatively steep trail and passes by the top of the Sneed Cory rock up to an overlook with good views of the park and the mountains. Along the trail and at the top we can find specimens of the early bloomer cactus (Echinomastus intertextus var. dasyacanthus).

Remember there is a $5 charge per car for the park. You can get your pass and pay online in advance HERE.
