El Paso Mission Trail: San Elizario

San Elizario Presidio Chapel

Take a walking tour of historic San Elizario. See the Presidio (Fort), the Presidio Chapel, the Memorial Placita, the old County Jail which was, as legend has it, the only jail Billy the Kidd ever broke into! Explore shops and art galleries in a community far more ancient than Marfa, Texas. On April 28, 1598, Don Juan Oñate’s caravan celebrated the first Thanksgiving in what is now the present day United States. This Thanksgiving feast predated the one in Massachusetts by 23 years!

Learn more about Don Juan Oñate, the Pueblo Revolt, Spaniards, Apaches and the Salt War just as a beginning.

Your guide will be Shelby McCue, President of the El Paso Mission Valley Association, which is dedicated to the education, promotion and preservation of the missions at Ysleta, Socorro, and San Elizario Chapel.

Meet at the Presidio Chapel (there is a parking lot) at 10 AM sharp. (MAP)

Plan to explore the shops and art galleries of San Elizario. There are several good restaurants in and around San Elizario: the Outlaw Saloon & Grill at Licon Dairy, Sofia’s, 11800 Glorietta Road to name two. The El Paso Mission Trail website has a long list of places to eat.
