Dog Canyon: Geology of the Tularosa Basin

Explore the majestic Dog Canyon located in Oliver Lee state park, New Mexico. You will make a strenuous hike up from the valley floor through millions of years of sedimentary rock up to the rim of the Sacramento mountains. Bring plenty of water and a lunch to enjoy at the top. Discuss the Tularosa basin, White Sands and the formation of the Rio Grande rift valley. This trip is 10 miles round trip and recommended for experienced hikers due to the rapid elevation gain and rough terrain. Meet at the Edge of Texas restaurant at 7:30 am. Look for the Blue Chevy Colorado. The drive to Alamogordo is approximately 1 hour. Bring 5 dollars to pay the park fee or purchase your entrance permit online at https://www.emnrd.nm.gov/spd/fees-permits/. For more information contact Paulo Galvan at georocks30@gmail.com.
