Join Celebration of Our Mountains Board members, Paul Galvan and Eric Kappus, on a field trip to this famous volcano, which is not only the youngest volcano in the El Paso/Juarez region, it is also where Apollo astronauts trained. Kilbourne Hole erupted tons of the August birthstone "peridot" and you can collect the gemstone while you are there! Meet at Rudy's BBQ on Artcraft at I-10, 6401 South Desert Blvd. (MAP) and caravan from there. High clearance vehicles only or arrange to ride with someone with a high clearance vehicle. The trip is 6-hours long so make sure you have a full tank of gas, plenty of water and snacks, and a hat. For more information, contact Eric Kappus, eric_kappus@hotmail.com.

Kilbourne Hole is a maar. Learn more about maars.
