Hike to the Avispa Canyon Crash Site

Fairchild_PT-19A_050309-F-1234P-024.jpg

Hike to the crash remains of a WW2 trainer aircraft, a PT-19, that crashed during a training mission. Not much is known about this accident and the wreckage was first suspected to have been mining equipment, not an aircraft crash.

This is a 5-hours long hike that will start at the Sunset Loop Trailhead in Tom Mays park (MAP) and will continue along the trail for a couple of miles before following an arroyo to the crash site. There is little elevation gain and the hike is about 6 miles round trip. Loose rocks in the arroyo bed are the biggest issue for walking, some vegetation as well.

This will be a moderate to difficult hike, due to the off trail section, the possible heat/sun this time of year and the length of the hike. Please dress appropriately for the expected weather (see link below) and bring plenty of water (minimum 3 Liters). Bring snacks and any medications that you might need. Bring a mask. Hand sanitizer will be available. Gloves and long pants are recommended. Wear a hat and/or sunscreen. There is essentially no shade. Wear strong hiking shoes/boots, since this is an off-trail area, so loose rocks and bushes abound. Cactus, thorny plants, and Lechugilla are prolific here as well. Hike is pet friendly if they can make 6+ miles in the desert. Bring extra water for them.

There is a park entrance fee (day pass) for this, so if you have a park pass or know someone that is, you can ride with them, or pay the $5 for the pass. Please sign up on the park website for this hike:
