Join COM Board members Paulo Galvan and Eric Kappus on an evening hike to Aden crater followed by a lunar geology talk, stargazing and, if possible, looking at the moon’s surface. Aden crater is a shield volcano north west of El Paso that last erupted approximately 18,000 years ago and is located at the center of the Potrillo volcanic field. The massive lava flow where NASA astronauts trained during the 1960’s is also used today as a test site for future instruments and techniques that will be used in upcoming space exploration missions. No fee and pet friendly. Bring water and dress for rough terrain. The hike is easy to moderate, sturdy, durable hiking shoes are highly recommended. Green or red flashlights will be best for stargazing. High clearance vehicles are a must due to the rough and rocky road. The drive is approximately 1.5 hours to the crater. The hike is roughly 2 hours and stargazing will begin soon after sunset. Participants are welcomed to bring their own telescopes. Email Paulo Galvan at georocks30@gmail.com for questions or to RSVP. Meet at Rudy’s BBQ on Artcraft (MAP) by the electric car charging stations at 4:45 pm to depart promptly at 5:00 pm.
