Date: March 30, 2024, 8 am to 5 pm.
Meeting Point: Rudy’s, corner of Artcraft and I-10
Leaders: Dean von Matre (professional Surveyor)
Description: Join the crew on a trip to explore one of the wild west international boundary areas. We will talk about this history of the US / Mexico border, explore the area, and visit survey monuments erected in the late1800s. Near this boundary exists the Santa Rita to Janos Trail, old El Paso & SW Railroad, plus there are several old mining areas, the Sierra Rica and Occidental mines, which we plan to explore for rock hounding opportunities.
Several geologists, including Eric Kappus, Paul Galvan, and Lance Robert will co-lead the trip and will present the geologic history of the area and describe the rock and minerals of the mines. Please note that water, sunscreen, hiking shoes, hats and warm clothing are recommended. It is also a good idea to bring lunch, camera, rock hammers and other usual rock collecting kit.
