1st Day Hike – Upper Sunset Trai

  • Franklin Mountains State Park 2900 Tom Mays Park Access Road El Paso, TX, 79911 United States (map)

Let's start the New Year’s resolutions off on the right hiking foot!

Join us to work up a sweat and burn some calories while taking in the splendors of the Franklin Mountains State Park.

This year we will be hiking the Upper Sunset Trail. This easy to moderate hike takes you along a low ridgeline west of the Tom Mays Park Access road. While there are some short steep inclines and declines, you are rewarded with great views of the valley. The observant hiker will also spot a variety of fossils in our limestone, but remember to leave them where you find them for other visitors to enjoy.

Meeting Location: Southern Lower Sunset Trailhead. When you enter Tom Mays, stop by the Visitor Center and let the ranger on duty know you are part of the hike. This is where you will pay the fee. Take the first sharp left after passing the booth and find a parking space.

Length: 3 miles round trip

Difficulty level: Moderate - difficult.

Bring: Water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes/boots; optional: hiking stick, camera, binoculars, a map.

Fee: $5 park entrance fee 13 years old and up; free for Texas State Park Pass holders and Children 12 and under.

Please call (915) 444-9121 to make a reservation as the hike will be capped at 20 participants.
