Join us on a half-mile easy-to-moderate hike to the outdoor amphitheater at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park on October 14th to view the annular solar eclipse! The guided hike will begin at 9:15 starting at the shade next to the restrooms. The eclipse maximum will occur around 10:30 a.m. when the sun itself will appear as a thin blazing crescent. NMSU astronomer Dr. Mason will be at the amphitheater from 9 a.m. to noon to share his knowledge and expertise as visitors safely view the eclipse through a telescope, make their own solar viewer, learn about the solar system, and enjoy this special celestial event in a grand desert setting. Visitors should park in the upper parking lot (near the restrooms).
There will be Asombro staff, educational resources, shaded tables, and an ADA paved trail for those who wish to stay nearby the parking lot. For those that wish to hike on their own to the amphitheater to meet Dr. Mason, a scale model of the solar system will guide you along the way.
