La Cueva Guided Hike

Join Bureau of Land Management Archaeologist, Garrett Leitermann, for a hike that will have you stepping into the past at the Dripping Springs Natural Area.

For over 5,000 years La Cueva (“The Cave”) has been home to many people including prehistoric Archaic and Jornada Mogollon people, Manso, Mescalero Apache, and cattle rustlers to name a few. More infamously, the cave is home to one of the oldest cold cases in Las Cruces involving the death of El Hermitano (the hermit). Attendees will learn about the history and archaeology of the area as well as the importance of Leave No Trace when visiting archaeological sites.

Prospective attendees for the hike will meet at Dripping Springs Natural Area's La Cueva group site parking lot at 10:00 a.m. The group site is the second La Cueva parking lot with the large group shelter.

Remember to dress appropriately for the weather and bring water, snacks, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and good hiking shoes. The hike will be approximately 2-3 hours and is relatively easy. The hike will stay on established trails and has a maximum gain of approximately 200ft in elevation.

There is a $5 day use fee for visiting Dripping Springs Natural Area. Dogs are not allowed on the hike.
