During World War II the National Monument was used as a bombing range. The target is just over a half mile in diameter and can be seen from Google Earth. The bombs were not armed. Thus, there are no craters, no unexplored ordnance, and the target is largely intact. After exploring the bomb target area you will hike along the Butterfield Trail which is still visible in some locations. This portion of the Organ Peaks Desert Mountains National Monument is relatively flat but has outstanding views. Hiking distance is open.
Dr. John Walton will be your field trip leader/interpreter.
