Natural History of Knapp Canyon

Knapp Canyon Trace Fossil

Knapp Canyon, also known as Hondo Pass Canyon, is one of the recently preserved pieces of land in the Franklin Mountains. You will hike up into this canyon on an old dirt road and learn about the natural history of the area, which extends back 1.2 BILLION years! You will get to see some of the oldest trace fossils in Texas, from a time before animals! This is a moderately difficult hike of about 2 miles on unimproved road. Experienced hikers only please.

Your co-leaders are Dr. Eric Kappus and Rocio Ronquillo, Frontera’s Open Space Manager. The event is co-sponsored by Frontera Land Alliance.

Meet at the 7-Eleven at Hondo Pass and Magnetic Dr. (MAP). Bring plenty of water, wear a hat and appropriate clothing, have on hiking boots or shoes please.
