The Catwalk Gila Wilderness Day Trip

catwalk.jpg

Visit the famous Catwalk in the Gila National Forest, Glenwood, New Mexico.

The Catwalk's history began with the discovery of gold and silver in the rugged Mogollon Mountains above Whitewater Canyon. In 1893, the small town of Graham (also known as Whitewater) grew around a mill, located on the west hillside near the present day parking area. The mill only lasted about 10 years. In the mid-1930's the Civilian Conservation Corps rebuilt the Catwalk. The Catwalk bridge system washed away during a huge flooding event after the 2012 Whitewater-Baldy Fire. It was rebuilt and is now open for approximately .5 miles from the parking lot. This is a very accessible area and easily hiked by all ages. Several brave souls enjoy swimming in the small ponds and waterfalls that make up the creek.

Meet at the gas station/ Dairy Queen 6990 N. Desert Blvd. on the corner of Transmountain and Gateway West (MAP) at 6:30 to depart by 7:00am. The drive to The Catwalk is 3.5 hours long. Bring 3 dollars to pay for the park fee. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes, hat, binoculars, hiking stick, swimming shorts if you’re brave…. Contact trip leader Paulo Galvan at georocks30@gmail.com before the trip for details. We will return to El Paso that evening after lunch, or you may choose to stay the night at any of the local cabins, or in Silver City.
