Join hiking ace, AJ, on this 6+ miles round-trip hike to see and hear some history of tin mining in El Paso. AJ will be joined by geology graduate student, Joshua Lewis, who will explain about the extensive geology of the area. Learn about the structure and formation of the Franklins, the geological history that played a significant role of the creation of tin, as well as the history and excavation of the old tin mine.

Meet at Chuch Heinrich Park (MAP). You will need a $5 day pass since we will be going into Franklin Mountains State Park. Please go to the TWPD website link to obtain one:

Plan on taking the more scenic route, the Maze Trail. to the mines and possibly back. This hike is rated moderately difficult, mainly for the distance not so much for the elevation. The hike to the mines has some elevation gain, but after leaving the mines, it is mostly downhill.

Please bring sufficient water (2+ liters), snacks, and good walking shoes for rocky trails. If you like hiking poles, please bring them. There will be an opportunity to crawl back into part of the mine that is dark, so again dress appropriately and bring a flashlight if you plan on going into the mines. Bring any medications you may personally need. The hike is pet friendly if they are sociable and can do 6+ miles on rocky trails. Please pick up after your pet. Bring extra water for them.

Plan on 4-5 hours total time outside, and while the mines have some comfortable shade, the trail there and back does not. Please check the expected weather and plan accordingly.
