Avispa Canyon: PT-19 Crash Site

Fairchild PT-19

Fairchild PT-19

Hike to the crash remains of a WW2 trainer aircraft, a PT-19, that crashed during a training mission. Not much is known about this accident and the wreckage was first suspected to have been mining equipment, not an aircraft crash.

This is a 5-hours long hike that will start at the Sunset Loop Trailhead in Tom Mays park (MAP) and will continue along the trail for a couple of miles before following an arroyo to the crash site. There is little elevation gain and the hike is about 6 miles round trip. Loose rocks in the arroyo bed are the biggest issue for walking, some vegetation as well.

This will be a moderate to difficult hike, due to the off trail section, and the length of the hike. Please dress appropriately for the expected weather (see link below) and bring plenty of water (minimum 3 Liters). Bring snacks and any medications that you might need. Bring a mask. Hand sanitizer will be available. Gloves and long pants are recommended. Wear a hat and/or sunscreen. There is essentially no shade. Wear strong hiking shoes/boots, since this is an off-trail area, so loose rocks and bushes abound. Cactus, thorny plants, and Lechugilla are prolific here as well. Hike is pet friendly if they can make 6+ miles in the desert. Bring extra water for them.
