dog canyon.jpeg

We apologize. Regrettably, this field trip has been cancelled. We hope to re-schedule it for spring 2021.

Do a day hike of Dog Canyon which is located in the Sacramento Mountains at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park just south of Alamogordo, New Mexico. This trail is rated as strenuous at a little over 9 miles round trip, rough terrain, steep climbs and recommended for experienced hikers. The trail runs along the inside walls of the canyon and features impressive limestone cliffs, a Cholla forest, a small creek and a breathtaking view of the Tularosa Basin. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash.

Meet at the Sam’s club parking lot in the Northeast on Diana Dr. (MAP) at 7:30am to depart by 8:00am. Driving your own car is strongly recommended and the use of a mask will be required when entering the park. Once on the trail, we can discuss social distancing rules. If you decide to carpool, you will do so at your own risk or with someone you spend considerable time with. The drive to Oliver Lee is just over an hour long. Bring plenty of water, sturdy hiking shoes, hat, binoculars, hiking stick…. Bring 5 dollars to pay for the park fee. Contact trip leader Paulo Galvan at georocks30@gmail.com before the trip or the morning of for details.
