Do a Day Trip Hike at the Gila Wilderness Catwalk

catwalk.jpg

Visit the famous Catwalk in the Gila National Forest, Glenwood, New Mexico. The Catwalk's history began with the discovery of gold and silver in the rugged Mogollon Mountains above Whitewater Canyon. In 1893, the small town of Graham (also known as Whitewater) grew around a mill, located on the west hillside near the present day parking area. The mill only lasted about 10 years. In the mid-1930's the Civilian Conservation Corps rebuilt the Catwalk. The Catwalk bridge system washed away during a huge flooding event after the 2012 Whitewater-Baldy Fire. It was rebuilt and is now open for approximately .5 miles from the parking lot. This is a very accessible area and easily hiked by all ages. Several brave souls enjoy swimming in the small ponds and waterfalls that make up the creek.

Meet at the GIANT gas station on the corner of Transmountain and N. Desert Blvd., 6990 N Desert Blvd. (MAP) at 6:30 AM to depart by 7:00 AM. Driving your own car is strongly recommended and the use of a mask will be required when entering the park. Once on the trail, we can discuss social distancing rules. If you decide to carpool, you will do so at your own risk or with someone you spend considerable time with. The drive to The Catwalk is 3.5-hours long. Bring 3 dollars to pay for the park fee. Bring plenty of water, sturdy hiking shoes, hat, binoculars, hiking stick, a mask, swimming shorts if you’re brave….
