Then join the Las Cruces BLM to learn about the abundant marine life and to see petrifed wood and plants. Prehistoric Trackways is a world-renowned site for paleontology. Find out why!

Be prepared to hike approximately 2.5 miles on rough and rocky terrain while learning all about the climate and the organisms that inhabited Las Cruces 280 million years ago! The hike will be led by our BLM paleontologist!

Bring plenty of water and appropriate footwear and attire to hike on rough and rocky terrain. 

Directions: You will find us in the big, 2nd parking lot of the Monument. You can arrive at the Monument by heading west from the intersection of Shalem Colony Trail and Rocky Acres Trail. Then in about 1/4 mile take a dirt road on the left labeled as Permian Acres. If using GPS, just type in Prehistoric Trackways National Monument.

Alternate Directions: Travel on Picacho Ave./ Hwy. 70. At the stop light with Shalem Colony Trail go north on Shalem Colony Trail for approximately 5.5 miles. Prior to reaching the Rio Grande, you will reach a county road, Rocky Acres Trail. Turn west on Rocky Acres Trail. Go west approximately ¼ mile to a dirt road entrance on the left-hand side. Cross over a cattle guard and continue tothe west past the first parking lot to the second.
