Take a moderate 6.5-miles hike to the El Paso Tin Mines with the UTEP Geology Club. There is a short scramble to the mine entrance. The hike is almost 7 miles round trip so will be strenuous for young children. Please no children under 9-years of age. Learn about the historic El Paso Tin Mining and Smelter Company, mining, exploration and the geological history that shaped our mountains as well as some of the principles that guide field geologists in their studies. Dr. Phil Goodell, the founder of Celebration of Our Mountains, will be the chief interpreter along with members of other geology mining clubs. Meet at Chuck Heinrich Park, 11055 Loma Del Norte Drive. There is a $2 FMSP fee or use your Park Pass. Donations to the student UTEP Geology Club are encouraged but not required. Bring 3 liters of water, lunch, a flashlight, sunscreen and sturdy hiking shoes. For more information and to rsvp, contact Mercedes Navarro-O’Hara at mcnavhar@gmail.com or Carol Brown, 915-630-1424.
