Potrillo Volcanic Field Trip

  • Rudy's 6401 South Desert Boulevard El Paso, TX, 79932 United States (map)

Geology and Landscapes of the Potrillo Volcanic Field

This field excursion is focused on the relatively young (<2 mya) volcanics of the Potrillo Volcanic Field and is a logical extension of the preceding trip to Kilbourne Hole, which is also part of the volcanic field. With stunning panoramic views in all directions, the trip is designed to give participants an overview of this region and how the various geologic events create the landforms you see on the surface. We will observe landscapes, vegetation, and geology across wide areas including the Franklin Mountains, Organ Mountains, Las Uvas Mountains, Cooks Range, Florida Mountains, Tres Hermanas Mountains, Samalayuca, and Sierra Juarez.

The plan is to travel along the border Hwy 9 towards Columbus, with diversions around the E Potrillo Mountains, Mt Cox/Riley, and winding south through the various volcanic cinder cones typical of this young volcanic province. The plan includes a stop in Columbus with a visit to the Pancho Villa State Park and Museum. Depending on interest and time, we can have a meal in a local restaurant or Mosey across the border in Polomas for a visit to shops or restaurants there.

Geologist Lance Robert will be leading the trip. Where permissible, we will be able to see and collect samples of the various rocks of this area, including basalt (lava) with various textures, volcanic blocks and bombs and ash fall/flows ejected during various eruptions, and granite-like diorite from Mt Riley.

We will meet in the parking lot on the north side of Rudys at the Artcraft Rd and I-10 intersection. (address: 6401 S Desert Blvd) leaving there at 8:00 a.m. sharp, so please arrive by 7:45 a.m. We will caravan out Artcraft and turn west on Hwy 9 just before the Santa Theresa border crossing. The field trip involves moderate walking and hill climbing plus driving on several miles of rough gravel and rock roads. 4WD cars with high clearance are recommended. Those with any mobility constraints can still enjoy the trip with little to no walking.

The expected duration is from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., though there are opportunities to depart early if desired. Please also note that water, sunscreen, hiking shoes, hats, and warm clothing are recommended. It is also a good idea to bring lunch, a camera, rock hammers, and other usual rock-collecting kits.

There will be an outline document of the trip available the week before the trip - please send a note to hlswrob@yahoo.com if you would like a copy. I can also be reached at 409-554-1961 if there are any questions.
